You’re Self-Published: Take Some Risks, Be Yourself

This past week and a half, I’ve spent a great deal of time on Twitter chatting with fellow indie authors. Before this, I was simply posting tips, ideas, and random inspiration I was finding throughout the day.  But I’ve found that actually engaging with the people you’re following is a fabulous resource for marketing!  So speak up, be yourself, and have fun with twitter. It’s a great way to create your brand as an author.

I have yet to really connect with authors or readers in my genre, but one step at a time.  Even making friends with tweeps who regularly review or write is a great resource. You’ll get a better feel for what you should be doing to market your book and create your author brand.

I keep bringing up this term “brand” because that’s what I’m currently seeking out. Indie Book Collective (a great twitter feed you should follow @IndieBookIBC) mentioned this term my first week as an ebook publisher. I’m just now getting a feel for it.  If you want to reach out to your readers, you need brand yourself.  Just as you’re books are consistent, their text unchanging, you should be consistent. What image do you want your readers to have of you?  Your book won’t necessarily sell on its own.  You as the author also sell your book. If people are interested in what you have to say, they may take that next step and check out your book.

That said, I took a dive even further into self-publishing when one of my twitter friends, @AuthorThomasAmo author of An Apple for Zoe, asked me to do an interview with him. He will be posting his interview with me in his new series Writer to Writer that launches this Thursday, so be sure to check it out if you want to know more about Tearing Honor… or me. I would never have dreamed of doing an author interview. When I first started out in February, finally publishing Tearing Honor, I thought author interviews were probably a waste of time.  Boy was I a fool.  Even if no one reads the interview, just doing it makes all the difference!  You’re forced to find your brand when interviewing, which is fabulous! Another great thing about it? Depending on the questions presented to you, it can tell you a lot about your novel. Try casting your characters and explaining why you wrote your book. It will make you that much more comfortable with who you are as an author. I am so glad I got past my initial impression of author interviews. They’re another great resource for self-published authors, whether you just do interviews or read them, or both.

Lesson learned. Don’t hide away in a turtle shell. Let people know a little something about you and your book.

    Great post. I’m starting to dip my toes into the world of online presence, and coming up with a brand seems more challenging than I expected. It’s nice to know there are easy ways to ease into it!

      Excellent, looking forward to hearing how it goes for you. I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re easy ways, it really all depends on you yourself. Just keep working at it, you’ll find your brand 🙂
